To make a good music video, it all depends on the type of genre that the song is because different genres fit to different conventions and styles of music. A music video can be narrative or performance. A narrative music video contains some form of story or event. Whereas a performance music video contains footage of the artist performing and it can be live, in a studio or as part of a choreographed scene. The music video can also be illustrative or interpretive. An illustrative music video is one that will use the literal lyrics as a basis for the visuals. The visuals and the lyrics will have a very strong bond. An interpretive music video encourages the audience to speculate and think about the deeper meaning of the song. A narrative will be used that is not lifted straight from the lyrics and the bond between the two of them will not become immediately obvious. A surreal music video is a video that is so strange that it cannot be believed to be real. A homage music video is a tribute to something, the tribute can be to another song or for someone that has passed away. A pastiche is a literary or other artistic genre or technique that is that is an imitation.
